Be prepared for death

One of the smartest things we can do in our mature age is to follow that famous motto and, ‘be prepared’.

Why?  Because the grim reality of life is one day, death will come knocking at your door.

It could be a family member, but more likely a neighbor, a friend, or someone you hardly know and you may be the only one to pack up their possessions.  Most people never think of this scenario.

Ask yourself this! How many people do you know who are are living alone?  How many of these have little or no family around or living?

Given the ever increasing aging population (soon 1 in 2 people will be over 50), and with so many people living alone wouldn’t you think more people would seek information and importantly ensure their own affairs and important legal documents are current. Sadly over 50% of people in English speaking nations don’t have a Will or any other key documents set up. This can leave remaining family members in utter chaos and often causing them considerable financial stress.

But there’s one subject area most people don’t talk about.

Including most estate planners, other legal and financial, retirement professionals, it’s also a subject area for which most seniors, boomers and Gen X’s are totally unprepared. What is it?

How to pack up, sort out and distribute, all the possessions, all the household contents, of a person who has died. But then most forget this too, someone is going to have to do that for you one day.

We all need to address this subject with some seriousness, and I have in Wrapping It Up.

Ensuring all one’s important possessions are identified properly in a current legal Will and who will receive those items, is important but of equal importance - every adult needs to know what to do if you are called in to help or even totally pack up the possessions of a person who has died.

Ask anyone who has done this task and they will no doubt say, ‘I didn’t know what to do, or didn’t know where to start, and it took a lot longer than I thought. Most of all it was extremely stressful.'

So lets go back to the famous motto, of ‘Be Prepared.’ If you are confronted with the wrapping up task would you know what to do? Where would you start where would you begin?

It’s definitely not like moving house. And it’s not just a case of going in, getting rid of what you think is rubbish or trash, and tossing that out, then packing everything up, all the possessions, then taking those to the local charity or auction house or distributing some items to relatives or friends.  No, it’s far more than that.

Detailed step-by-step instructions, along with nuts ‘n’ bolts information and checklists are included in Wrapping It Up.

Remember the grim reality of life is one day, death will come knocking at your door. It could be a family member, but more likely a neighbor, a friend, or someone you hardly know. Be prepared!
